Mount Vernon Fire Destroys Businesses

A Mount Vernon neighborhood faced a massive fire on Monday morning, leaving residents homeless and business destroyed. Around 1:00 AM police and firefighters responded to the call on Gramatan Ave, where they began fighting the flames coming from the property, that was for sale for $3 million, near Nelson Mandela High School. Residents were evacuated in time and no injuries were reported, though all five storefronts were destroyed and six people were left without a home after one of the buildings collapsed and continued to burn. Eventually firefighters were able to put out the burning rubble. Investigators are searching for the cause of the fire, and members of the community are hoping that the property will not become an empty lot.
