Closter Resident Sentenced For Dealing Fatal Heroin Dose, Serves Warning For Others

A 28 year-old Closter resident has been sentenced to six years in state prison for selling heroin to a woman in 2013 which caused to her death due to overdose. Jesse Kurzweil sold the drug to co-defendent Christopher Benvenuto, 29, of Old Tappan who injected the fatal dose to 47 year-old Doreen Leach of Emerson. Bergen County Prosecutors have been charging drug dealers and suppliers in recent cases based on an underutilized state liability law if a victim dies as a result of drug ingestion. Heroin-related deaths in New Jersey has steadily risen since 2010 according to the Centers for Disease Control and the New Jersey Department of Criminal Justice with nearly triple the national average. Bergen County Senior Assistant Prosecutor Danielle Grootenboer called this case a “cautionary tale to anybody out there who thinks that they do no harm when they simply distribute drugs to a friend.”
