Mount Vernon Officials Seek Clarity on NYPD Break-In

Mount Vernon City Council President Marcus Griffith held a press conference on Wednesday where he and the lawyer for a couple who allege the NYPD broke into their home, questioned what was being done about the reports. Last week Richard and Geneva Smith reported last week to local police that two men claiming to be New York City Police officers forced their way into the couple’s apartment without properly identifying themselves or showing any sort of paperwork. According to the couple’s attorney they also reported the incident to the NYPD, and despite a statement from Internal Affairs and confirmation that the two men were officers, not much about the situation was cleared up. Mount Vernon Police stated they were not informed of a search occurring prior to the incident. At the conference Griffith stated that the NYPD and City Mayor Bill DeBlasio should meet with Mount Vernon officials to discuss both this incident and the recent death of resident Felix Kumi, who was hit by a stray bullet in a confrontation between police and a suspect.
