East Ramapo Monitors Meet with NYS Regents

The three monitors appointed by New York State Education Commissioner Mary Ellen Ellia and the Board of Regents spoke last week about their time reviewing the East Ramapo School District. Dennis Walcott, Monica George-Fields, and John Sipple met with the regents on Wednesday, stating that progress is being made and so far working with residents, students, and the school board has been positive. One of the first complaints the team received was the multiple deteriorating buildings within the district, and Walcott stated that $1 million in immediate repairs will be taken care of. So far the team has spent it’s time at almost all of the schools in the district, and have outlined the majority of issues, including spending and low test scores. In the coming months they will be compiling a report to be submitted in December and will be working on fixing as many problems as possible, one at a time, until then. There will be a public forum with the district and monitors on October 1.
