11 Closing New Jersey A&P Stores To Keep Employees In Buyout

A judge at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in White Plains approved the sale of 95 A&P stores, including 11 in the North New Jersey area for $370 million, to competitors Acme and Stop & Shop. According to Stephen Goldstein, senior managing director of Evercore Group LLC, a financial advisory firm hired by A&P, the sale of 71 stores to Acme and 24 stores to Stop & Shop is the “highest and best offers attainable at this time.” The deal will allow over 10,000 people to stay employed with both chains expecting to reach agreements with the labor unions once final approval for the sales is complete. The remaining stores will go up for auction on October 1st and 2nd.
