Orange County Joining Kyrias Joel Lawsuit

The Orange County Legislature voted on Thursday night to join the lawsuit filed by eight municipalities challenging the annexation of land by Kyrias Joel. The Monroe town board recently voted to give 164 acres of land to the Hasidic Jewish village, turning down the second proposal of more than 500 acres. Last week’s meeting was filled with both supporters and opponents of the expansion, which would allow the village to build high density housing on the annexed land. After the decision was announced opponents from Monroe and surrounding towns stated they would try to appeal, and earlier this week the eight towns and villages came forward with a lawsuit against Kyrias Joel, stating that the environmental reviews were not done correctly. The County Legislature voted 19-1 to approve joining the legal actions, and will be putting about $200,000 to the suit.
