Orange County Towns Challenging Kyrias Joel Expansion

The Orange County Legislature is currently in discussions to join a lawsuit filed by eight towns attempting to block the annexation of Monroe-owned land by Kyrias Joel. Last week, the town board voted to approve the Hasidic Jewish village’s proposal to expand by taking on 164- acres of land for high density housing. Many residents in the town and surrounding areas attended the meeting and expressed anger and frustration regarding the decision, many stating that they would challenge it. The recent lawsuit is doing just that. On Tuesday the municipalities released a joint statement that they will be spending $25,000 each for legal fees, claiming the strain on local resources and deficient environmental reviews as the reasons for the suit. The Legislature may be passing a resolution to provide $250,000 for an outside law firm as well, members stating that the majority agrees that the expansion would not benefit the county. The town board stated that they approved the proposal to “preserve a cohesive community”.
