Board of Regents to Decide on Teacher Evaluation Rules

The New York Board of Regents will be meeting on Wednesday to discuss required teacher evaluations. Earlier this year, when Governor Andrew Cuomo approved the state’s $142 billion budget he and the Legislature also put in place a system that rates teachers on the performance of their students on their standardized testing as well as their performance as an educator. According to Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch, the board recently proposed a new set of rules that would allow teachers to appeal their poor test rating of students if they did well in other areas of the evaluation and were rated “effective” or “highly effective” the prior year. Tisch stated a panel will most likely be put in place to hear the appeals of teachers.
