$38 Million To Test Waiting Rape Kits

New York City District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. announced that $38 million in funds from civil forfeitures will be used to test the 56,000 rape kits still waiting for testing. $41 million in addition aid from the U.S. Justice Department will go to 20 states for rape cases long untested. Natasha Alexenko, founder of Natasha’s Project and herself a sexual assault survivor, explained that the 10 years it took to process her own rape kit let her attacker remain at large. Testing in Detroit from 2009, revealed DNA matches to unsolved crimes in 23 states.
