Monroe Town Board Approves Annexation of Land for Kyrias Joel

The Monroe Town Board in Orange County met on Tuesday night to vote on the proposals to annex land from the town into the Hasidic Jewish village of Kyrias Joel. The meeting was packed with residents from both communities, hundreds of supporters as well as those outspokenly opposed to the proposals made their way into the community hall in Kyrias Joel where it was held, many forced to stand outside the building, due to the lack of seating room inside. The board announced their vote to the loud crowd, stating that they voted the plan to annex 507 acres for the village to expand, but had approved 164 acres in a 4-1 vote. Many of those opposed have expressed plans to appeal the board’s decision in the near future.
