Ward System And Trustee Changes Voted Down, Appeal Likely

By slim margins, the Rockland County Board of Elections announced the rejection of a ward system as well as turning down the trustee vote, at 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon. The announcement at the Dr. Robert L. Yeager Health Center elicited immediate response by pro-ward activists calling for an appeal. According to reports, both the machine and absentee count was won by the pro-ward side with activists contesting the 2,299 affidavit ballots by non-registered but eligible residents. The ward vote would have amended the town wide voting system, supported by Ramapo Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence and some ultra-Orthodox Jewish leaders, with residents accusing officials that the bloc vote style consistently dominates any election.
