Essex County, NJ Officers Start Wearing Body Cameras

40 officers in Essex County, New Jersey have been outfitted with body cameras to provide accountability and transparency between the community and local law enforcement. According to a press release, a general order from July was made effective Tuesday with a detailed statement about equipment, policy, and procedure regarding the body worn cameras. The high definition, waterproof cameras will show a 130 degree angle with and image sensor and an adjustable lens that rotates. 9 hours of continuous shooting from a single charge will be activated in a variety of circumstances including but not limited to traffic stops, checkpoints, responding to calls for service, and effecting an arrest. Guidelines for de-activating and re-activating body worn cameras are clearly stated. Public concerns remain that the cameras are not a cure-all for accountability. All footage captured by the cameras will be the sole property of the Essex County Sheriff’s Office which may hinder the public from obtaining it.
