Legionnaire’s Disease Death Toll Rises in NYC

The death toll is rising in a New York City outbreak of Legionnaire’s Disease. On Thursday the Health Department released statements ordering the testing and disinfecting of cooling systems in buildings throughout the South Bronx where at least 100 people have become infected by the Legionella Bacteria, which causes symptoms similar to pneumonia and has been found in five buildings so far. Mayor Bill DeBlasio stated that the testing is necessary, saying, “Everyone understands that the outbreak has been limited to one community in our city, but we are doing this out of an abundance of caution.” The death toll has reached ten since the first case a month ago and the New York State Health Department will be offering free testing for the bacteria in similar cooling units for the next few weeks.
