Man Involved in Wrong Way Crash Could Face Lesser Charges

According to the Rockland County District Attorney’s office they are requesting a judge lower charges against a man who is responsible for a woman’s death in a 2013 Yonkers car crash. 69-year old Michael Schechel was charged with negligent homicide when he drove the wrong way on the Tappan Zee Bridge and struck the car of Hannah Ayeh-Brachie, of Hillcrest, killing her and seriously injuring her husband. The DA’s office investigated the incident and recently concluded there was no cause for criminal charges and deemed the crash an accident. Schechel was allegedly taking medication for a respiratory illness at the time of the crash. The judge in the Westchester court did not drop the charges during Monday’s hearing but he may do so at the next hearing in October. Ayeh-Brachie’s family spoke out, stating that if the charges are dropped there will be no justice for the death of Rockland mother of four.
