Rabbi Found Not Guilty in Sexual Assault Case

A prominent Rockland County Rabbi who has been in court in recent weeks fighting accusations of sexual assault, received a verdict on Thursday. Laiby Stern accused New Square Rabbi Moshe Taubenfeld of molesting him for a period of five-years beginning at the age of eight. Stern claimed that he went to Taubenfeld for support after the September 11 attacks and was abused for years at the older man’s home in the predominantly Hasidic village. On Thursday in the conclusion of the non-jury trial, Judge Rolf Thorsen ruled that Taubenfeld was not guilty of the charges of second-degree sexual conduct against child assault expressed dismay for the future of children in the Hasidic communities, many stating that the verdict fortifies the lack of protection for victims of sexual assault.
