County Health Department Warns Of Health Risks From Certain Ayurvedic Medication

County Executive Ed Day and County Health Commissioner Patricia Schnabel Ruppert are warning residents of certain ayurvedic medications purchased from New York City which were found to contain elevated levels of heavy metals. The alternative medicines use herbal, mineral, or metal supplements to treat illnesses. In May of 2015, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene found 20 samples distributed by the Indian company, Shree Baidyanath to contain unsafe amounts of heavy metals for human use. Dr. Rupert is encouraging people to stop taking these medications immediately and consult with their doctors to see if testing for lead and heavy metals is necessary.
