Rockland Legislator Asking For Better Indian Point Alerts

Rockland County Legislator Lon Hofstein released a statement on Friday, urging federal officials to help create a system to better notify residents about emergencies at Indian Point Power Plant. Hofstein stated, “A siren warning system is 20th century technology that is wholly inadequate and antiquated in the 21st century.” Among those contacted in the approved resolution was the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, whom the Legislator asked that Entergy, who operates the plant, be required to update their siren warning system to emails, phone calls, and text messages to alert those living in the area of the reactors of any sort of emergency. In May one of the reactors was shut down after a fire sparked in electrical equipment. Once again in June a reactor was forced to shut down as crews worked to remove a balloon from a nearby powerline.
