Indian Point Unit 3 Back Online After Latest Incident

According to a release on the Indian Point Energy Center website, after a manual shutdown of Indian Point Unit 3 on Wednesday following fluctuating water levels in a steam generator, the Unit was brought back online late Thursday afternoon. It was determined that one of the three condensate pumps within the water feeding system for the steam generators shutdown though the unit was operating at full power. The two pumps, located away from the non-nuclear area, are operating while the third is being repaired. On May 9, the same Unit experienced an automatic shutdown when an insulation failure caused a transformer fire. The incident also caused an estimated 3,000 gallons of dielectric fluid, the electrical insulator and coolant to leak into the Hudson River. Federal environmental agencies evaluated the company’s response and regulation actions to the mineral oil fluid.
