Clarkstown Police Searching For Bait-And-Switch Suspect

Clarkstown Police are searching for a man who scammed two victims into buying fake gold coins. According to police, the suspect called “John”, answered an online ad from a Nanuet resident looking to buy Canadian Maple Leaf gold coins. After being assured the coins were authentic, the two met in the victim’s car and the transaction took place. The man handed over the coins to the victim before getting nervous and taking them back along with the $19,000. “John” put the coins in his pocket and handed over a similar pouch, before walking away. It was at that point the victim realized the coins were fake and that he had been scammed. Police say that the same man was seen running the same “bait-and-switch” scheme in Spring Valley on that same day. During the Spring Valley incident the suspect was seen getting in to a black BMW on the passenger side. The suspect is described as a black male in his late 20s to mid 30s and around 6 feet tall at 250 to 300 pounds. Anyone that has any information is asked to call Clarkstown Detectives Bureau at 845-639-5840.
