Tractor-Trailer Accident Shuts Down Thruway in Nyack

A accident between two tractor trailers on the Northbound side of I-87 in Nyack during this morning’s commute caused heavy traffic delays. Police received reports of explosions around 6 a.m. in Nyack between Exit 10 and 11 of I-87 and arrived to thick black smoke coming from the fiery impact of one tractor trailer colliding with an overpass bridge. The 18-wheeler nicked the other trailer which was pulled over due to a blown tire, and ricocheted into the overpass. Northbound traffic on the bridge and into Westchester was at a standstill as the highway was shutdown for 90 minutes until one lane opened up at 7:30 a.m. with all lanes opening at 10 a.m. Both drivers sustained non-life threatening head and shoulder injuries. The drivers were issued traffic and moving vehicle violations, one for failing to stay in their lane, and both were issued registration violations. Electrical and fiber optic cables running under the overpass were damaged in the fire but did not sustain structural damage.
