NYS Creating Crude Oil Train Emergency Plans

The Department of Environmental Conservation released plans to assist communities in the event of emergencies, such as explosions or spills, with trains carrying crude oil. Officials with the agency stated that they will begin working with fire departments and police in counties throughout New York state to provide a plan that can be used during potential emergencies as well as before to precent explosions and crashes. The state is also using part of the $2.1 million in the budget set aside to buy equipment to assist in the response time for spills of oil or other hazardous materials carried by trains in the area. Some of the money will be used to hire additional employees with the DEC and the Office of Fire and Prevention. Rockland County officials stated there will be a drill held in Orangetown in July to prepare first responders for oil train accidents. The county did create and release to residents an evacuation map for those in proximity of the CSX Rail Line.
