Bernie Madoff’s Former New City Accountant Sentenced

David Friehling, Bernie Madoff’s accountant from New City, was sentenced to house arrest by a Federal Judge late last week. Friehling admitted that he was not much of an accountant to Madoff, rather just there “rubber-stamping” financial statements and helping Madoff pull of the enormous Ponzi scheme. However once the investigation began, Friehling quickly turned into a witness turning over financial records as well as information. An article in The New York Times states that Mr.Friehling feels great remorse and wants to give back to the community and make an impact. Prosecutors have argued for a more lenient sentence due to his remorse, and because they believed he was not aware of the full extent of the scheme. According to the Times, the judge said that the Friehling family suffered enough, as they had also invested money into Madoff’s firm. Freihling’s own son, 23 year-old Jeremy Freihling committed suicide in 2012. Friehling’s sentence consists of a year of home detention and a year of supervised release, where he could have seen up to a 100 year prison sentence. Friehling also had to pay back $3.1 million and give up is million dollar home on Hi-Tor Road in New City. Other employees from Madoffs firm are facing up to 10-year prison sentences where Madoff is currently serving a 150-year prison sentence in North Carolina.
