Indian Point’s Unit 3 Up And Running

Entergy released a statement regarding the resumption of activity by Indian Point’s Unit 3 after a sixteen day automatic shutdown after the transformer failure from May 9 caused a fire and oil leak into the Hudson River. The statement also detailed the work that was done in collaboration with the U.S. Coast Guard and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to identify and implement efforts to contain the oil, known as dielectric fluid which insulates the electrical system and acts as a coolant inside the transformers and does not contain PCBs. Estimates by the Coast Guard and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration show that about 3,000 of the 24,000 total gallons of transformer oil entered the river and no action is needed at the approximately 20 locations where oil sheens have been reported. Engineers and experts continue to investigate the incident and will release a full report on the cause of the transformer failure by the end of June.
