Bear Sightings In Orangetown

Orangetown is being put on alert due to bear sightings over the past weekend. A New York Alert was issued last Friday evening, May 22, by the County of Rockland due to a black bear sighting at 41 Secor Boulevard in Pearl River. A press release by the Orangetown Police Department from the morning of Sunday, May 24 warned of a reported bear sighting in the soccer fields on Old Orangeburg Road in Orangeburg, in the same area as the alert from Friday. Officials are reiterating proper garbage storing procedures to prevent contact with bears. Garbage bins should be kept sealed and inside the garage or a sturdy shed. Odors can be masked by soaking rags with ammonia and placing them inside or on the bins. Clean out the grease traps from grills after use and turn on high after cooking to burn off odors. Do not leave food outdoors and keep refrigerators and freezers indoors. Contact your local police department to report a bear sighting.
