Stony Point Man In Custody After Nearly Six Hour Standoff

The Stony Point Police Department released a statement regarding an incident late Thursday evening in which Matthew Conklin, 36, of Stony Point, armed himself with a rifle and barricaded himself inside his parents’ home at 491 Willow Grove Road leading to a standoff that finally let up early this morning.

Police responded to the same residence twice last night, once at 11:25 in the evening for a domestic dispute which resolved without incident and the other coming at 11:53 for a 911 call hang-up. Police spoke with Conklin’s parents upon arriving at the home a second time who were quickly removed from the scene when Conklin suddenly appeared armed with a rifle. REACT, the Rescue Entry and Counter Terrorism Team of the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office were deployed to form a safe perimeter around the home before conducting negotiations. Police units from the Town of Clarkstown and Haverstraw as well as the New York State Police assisted in response to the incident and at approximately 5:40 in the morning, REACT officers were able to take Conklin into custody. Rockland Paramedics the Stony Point Ambulance Corps were on the scene though no injuries resulted from the standoff. Conklin was transported to Nyack Hospital to undergo evaluation. At this time it is unclear whether he will face charges.
