Rockland Catholic School Teachers Lead Contract Negotiation Strike

Members of the Federation of Catholic Teachers Union are planning a one day strike today in an attempt to negotiate a contract. Union President Julia Pignataro called the contract offer from the Archdiocese of New York coercion, stating that when teachers were offered a one percent wage increase, it was made clear that if they accepted that raise, more schools would need to be closed. There are five schools that will be striking today; one in Rockland County and four in New York City. Substitutes will be provided for classes missing teachers attending the strike or remaining home today. A spokesman for the archdiocese stated that the strike will likely do nothing more than disrupt education but the two parties are optimistic that they will reach an agreement by the end of the year. Union members have been without a contract since September.
