Rockland DOH Warns Of Popular Synthetic Marijuana

In a Press Release this morning by the Rockland County Department of Heath, County Health Commissioner Patricia Schnabel Ruppert and County Executive Ed Day are warning the public against the dangers of synthetic marijuana. In New York State alone, over 160 individuals have been to the emergency room since April 8 citing harmful side effects from smoking the questionable plant material laced with chemicals. People presenting symptoms of synthetic CANN-abinoid intoxication complain of anxiety, paranoia, rapid heart rate, seizures, and possibly kidney failure, heart attacks, and death. The synthetic marijuana, referred to as K2, Spice, Blonde, Summit, Red Dawn X among a variety of other names, have different chemical compounds creating unpredictable side effects with no antidote for intoxication or overdose currently available. There have been no cases reported in Rockland County but the Rockland County Drug Task Force is encouraging residents to dial in the confidential tip line at 732-1000 if they see the product for sale in local stores or smoke shops.
