High Tide Causes Stuck Barge Under TZ Bridge

Monday nights thunderstorm and heavy rain fall may have caused a Thruway Authority maintenance barge to move from its position and get stuck under the Tappan Zee Bridge. The barge was discovered on a pile cap at low tide but has been repositioned since with no injuries reported. According to Brian Conybeare, advisor on the bridge project, “there is no apparent damage to the existing bridge or any other equipment and no dangers to workers or the public.” Both Tappan Zee Contractors and the Thruway Authority are reported to have inspected and secured their barges and vessels. Residents can track each of the construction rigs as GPS devices have been installed and their locations can be viewed on the newnybridge.com website. This added step was taken after several barges broke free since September 2013.
