Prepaid College Proposal Discussed by Senator Carlucci

Senator David Carlucci held a press conference on Friday, where he announced a proposal for prepaid college credits in New York State. According to the proposal a parent can place money into a savings-like account that will earn interest over the years, and will be applicable to SUNY, CUNY, and participating private schools. Senator Carlucci stated that he sponsored the bill to give parents the opportunity to have their child’s college tuition paid off by the time they are ready to attend, and with prices rising steadily through the years, the interest earned on saved money would be applied to the additional costs. The deposits would be tax-free and cost New York State about $2 million a year.
