Group Seeking to Lower Age Teens Are Charged as Adults

A group of New York State advocates met in Westchester on Friday on Friday to urge lawmakers to change the age at which teens are charged as adults. The current age that a child can be charged as an adult is 16, and advocates from the Lower Hudson Valley would like to see that increased to 18-years old. New York officials are being urged to separate those who are charged with violent and non-violent crimes, advocates stating that in many situations 16-year old shoplifters face the same prisons and time as violent adults.
