New York Education Group Calls on Cuomo For Funds Owed

cuomoThe Alliance in Quality Education, a New York based education organization, released a report that shows $5.9 billion is due to schools throughout the state. The report directly target’s Governor Andrew Cuomo in its indictments that he ignored the Campaign for Fiscal Equity vs. the State’s landmark decision from 1995 that the system for funding public education is unconstitutional and he continues to under-fund New York schools. The $5.9 billion is the amount owned to the state as a result of the New York Court of Appeals decision. The report also states that Cuomo promised to fund it when he ran for Governor in 2010 yet according to State Education Department data, $4.9 billion is owed from the Foundation Aid program he enacted in 2007 to comply with the decision.

The report breaks down the individual amounts still owed to each district. Our local 96th district reads $40 million in funds and the 97th district at a little under $24 million. This report released before the start of the fiscal year on April 1st is an attempt at appealing for more aid though at $23 billion, the state already receives the most school funding in the nation.
