Tappan Zee Bridge Construction Slowed Due To Weather

Brutal winter conditions are slowing down workers on the New Tappan Zee Bridge Project. Though a two-month shutdown period has been scheduled into the project’s timeline, Tappan Zee Contractors, the group working on the bridge, seeks to push through when conditions permit. The river freezing over hinders crew boats from maneuvering around the crane barges and equipment which may have an effect on two parallel spans expected to be completed by next year. This is not the first tough winter for the project with slowdowns coming last January from frozen conditions and high winds as the cause of barges coming loose last March. Earlier this month, details for gauging weather severity were released in a three level system with scenarios and alternate plans outlined.

Between two and three Coast Guard icebreakers have been trekking up and down the Hudson from the George Washington Bridge to just outside Albany daily since mid-January. From the Tappan Zee Bridge to West Point, ice coverage is at 40 percent which is 10 percent less than this time last year.B9316094201Z_1_20150202120559_000_G7P9RK3LU_1-0
