Clarkstown Board of Education to Close One Elementary School

At a Clarkstown School Board meeting on Thursday night members voted 6-1 to approve Superintendent J. Thomas Morton’s proposal to close one of the ten elementary schools in the district. The board announced that Congers Elementary School will remain closed, a little over a year after residents approved to pass a $6.5 million bond to repair the historic building’s structure. The work is continuing to fix cracked walls and asbestos, but the students who were moved to New City and Lakewood Elementary Schools this year will stay in their new schools, with officials stating that Congers will not be sold, but likely rented out in the future. According to officials, keeping the school closed will save the district $1.5 million for the 2015-16 district budget, preventing the need to cut programs and staff in the high schools.
