Release Denied for Men Convicted of Pearl River Murder

On Monday a judge denied early release for one of two men accused and charged with murdering a 16-year old Pearl River girl in 1980. 62-year old Richard LaBarbera of Pearl River was arrested with 54-year old Robert McCain for the October 28, 1980 murder of Paula Bohevesky. The men, who had both been drinking at the time, attacked her in an alley as she was walking home from the Pearl River Library, hitting her over the head and attempting to sexually assault her. When they realized she was still alive they stabbed the girl repeatedly with a knife. District Attorney Thomas Zugibe stated to the Journal News that the parole board made the right decision by ruling that LaBarbera was violent and cannot be trusted outside of prison. Both McCain and LaBarbera are serving sentences of 25 years to life and have been denied release every two years since 2005, many residents and officials have participated in a petition to ensure the men do not get released, including Legislator John Murphy who organized it, and Paula’s now 80-year old mother Lois Bohovesky of Pearl River.
