East Ramapo District To Go To Court

The East Ramapo School District is returning to court in a case against the New York State Education Department about special education programs in the district. According to officials the district will appear in court on January 23 and has hired Attorney David Butler for $450 per hour to fight accusations made by the state that East Ramapo is not following the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, which ensures that students in special education obtain every level of learning that is available. The district stated through spokesperson Darren Dopp that the lawsuit involves 20 students out of 2,400 that are part of the special education programs and they will be appealing the state’s claims that the placement of students in private schools are against the federal laws that often say the best education setting would be in public schools.
