Law Protecting First Responders Passed

A law passed statewide on Wednesday, making it mandatory that home owners inform first responders when they are building with truss-type pre-engineered wood. The law was signed by Governor Cuomo and will take effect on January 1, 2015. According to Rockland’s Director of Emergency Services, Gordon Wren, truss-type roofs are especially dangerous to firefighters and homeowners because they catch fire quickly and can easily collapse. Local government will be required to inform emergency responders of construction methods used, when property owners mark on building permits that they are using truss-type lumber, and properties will be marked by a symbol on the electrical boxes.
