Mother Pleads Guilty in Baby’s Death

The Spring Valley mother of a newborn baby boy was killed and found left in a dumpster in November pleaded guilty on Monday to charges of first-degree manslaughter. According to psychiatrists working with police, 24-year old Maria Guaman-Guaman, who suffered brain damage from an accident as a child and has an overall IQ of 53, acted under severe emotional stress when she strangled her son and dumped his body, which was later found by a worker at a Westchester recycling plant. According to Prosecutor Stephen Moore, Guaman-Guaman is an immigrant in the country illegally, who speaks almost no English, and admitted through an interpreter in court that she had caused the death of the baby, whom community members and police christened Baby Angel. The woman faces five to twenty-five in prison and is set to be sentenced on September 4.
