Report Shows Increase In New York Housing Costs

A report released by New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli Monday stated that renters and homeowners in New York have spent more than thirty percent, the national percentage of rental payments, of their income on housing. The report studied trends in housing from 2000 to 2012 using U.S. Census data. According to DiNapoli in 2012 the Bronx was the highest rent stressed county in New York, but was closely followed by counties upstate and surrounding New York City, including Rockland. In Rockland over fifty percent of income was spent on housing for the average renter. For homeowners in New York suburbs housing costs raised ten percent in the twelve years the study was completed and real estate taxes have risen by an average of twelve percent in fifty-three New York counties.
