Novartis Closing Suffern Plant

A spokeswoman for the Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp. released a statement on Tuesday announcing that the company will be closing their Suffern plant starting this year until 2017. According to Julie Masow the plant will be completely shut down, all 525 employees will be affected by the closure, though there is the possibility of transfer for some employees. Christopher St. Lawrence, Ramapo Town Supervisor stated that he would guess Novartis payments cover ten percent of Suffern’s taxes and the town’s businesses and school district will feel the impact by 2016. Suffern Mayor Patricia Abato stated that she would be meeting with the company to hear their plans on the closure of the plant, which employs various members of the community.
