Clarkstown PD Alerts Residents of Scam

Clarkstown Police are warning residents of a scam that nearly caught a 71- year old woman from Nanuet. According to police the woman called them after she was contacted by a man who claimed to be from the Internal Revenue Service and told her that she had an outstanding debt that would lead to her arrest. The woman stated that the man told her to buy nine Green Dot Moneypak prepaid debit cards and to load them with money, then give him the card information. Last week O&R released a statement that a similar scam was using their name to take money from customers. Victims were told that they owe money on gas and electric bills and to add money to the Green Dot cards. Th e calls have been reported in English and Spanish, from live and automated callers. Officials are asking all residents to stay aware and if they receive a similar call to inform their local authorities.
