Governor Cuomo Blasts MTA; Calls Commuter Tax “Political Suicide”

Governor Andrew Cuomo spoke yesterday at the “Association for a Better New York” luncheon, and slammed the MTA, calling them a mechanism for providing political cover for cost increases, and he called their performance, “indefensible”…

Cuomo said a commuter tax on Hudson Valley riders would be political suicide, but supported the notion of congestion pricing. He said the numbers of commuters who drive from outside the city into the congestion pricing zone is pretty low anyway, but his numbers conveniently left out Rockland riders, who have very few transit options. He added he won’t ask riders for more money if the MTA doesn’t improve their performance. The MTA and NJ Transit have been in Rockland lawmakers’ crosshairs lately over performance issues and cutbacks.
