Feds Sue Woodcliff Lake, NJ, Over Alleged Discrimination Against Jewish Group

The federal government has filed a religious discrimination lawsuit against Woodcliff Lake after the borough denied an Orthodox Jewish congregation’s attempts to construct a worship center. Woodcliff Lake and their zoning board are accused of violating the“Religious Land Use” act by denying Valley Chabad the right to build a house of worship on its property at Werimus Road and Woodcliff Avenue. Published reports said hundreds of people in the group had been meeting in a private home, leading to warnings from borough officials. According to the suit filed in U.S. District Court in Newark, they spent almost a decade looking for suitable property in the area, but the borough denied them each time.
