Rocklanders Featured in National TV News Magazine Shows

Rocklanders are making their impression in prime-time TV magazine shows this month. Last week Dateline NBC featured a program on Ramapo podiatrist Ira Bernstein and his girlfriend who are now in prison for attempting to hire a hit man to kill his wife. Last night Suffern native Ed Rubbert was featured in an “ESPN 30 for 30” documentary that tackled the 1987 NFL strike season. The show caught up with Rubbert recently and brought him to his parents’ New City home to talk to them and his brothers about how he was asked to join the team, then he left and came back and how he agonized over whether to cross the picket line. Rubbert did play quarterback for the Washington Redskins that year. He started and won two games, and holds the distinction of completing the longest pass from scrimmage that season, an 88-yard touchdown. While the Redskins would go on to win the Super Bowl without him, Rubbert played for the Albany Firebirds in the Arena Football League in the early 90’s. He was also the inspiration for Keanu Reeves’ character in the football movie The Replacements.
