Nyack Man Killed when Tree Falls on Car; Tree had Recently Passed Inspection

80-year-old Upper Nyack resident Jerome Muhlenberg was killed instantly yesterday morning when an oak tree fell onto his car on North Broadway. Clarkstown Police say the incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. right in front of the Upper Nyack School as Muhlenberg was driving south toward Nyack. Students had not yet arrived and buses were diverted to the high school until parents could be contacted. Police found Muhlenberg’s car crushed by the tree, which also took out several power lines. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Rockland Paramedics. In a letter published on the district’s website and sent to school families and staff, Nyack School Superintendent Doctor James Montesano said the fallen tree was just inspected by a district-contracted arborist on May tenth and did not show signs of decay.
