Afternoon News Update 11/7

Police continue to investigate a fire that burned down almost 10 acres of the Blue Mountain Reservation this past Saturday. Authorities are unsure as to what started the fire but have stated that construction equipment, which hadn’t been used in days, was caught in the blaze. The equipment is being used to complete construction on the Spectra pipeline project, but police are not sure whether the fire and the Spectra pipeline project are related. (Source: LoHud)

Real estate heir Robert Durst is scheduled to appear in court in Los Angeles in connection to the murder of his friend Susan Berman back in 2000. The Westchester native, Durst was the subject of the HBO documentary, ‘The Jinx,” which detailed the disappearance of his first wife in 1982, the death of Susan Berman, and death of his Galeveston, Texas neighbor Morris Black in 2001. Preliminary hearings are expected to take place in the spring of 2017, while the trial is scheduled for later in the year. (Source: LoHud)

NJ Transit executive director Steven Santoro has admitted that the agency’s safety record is worse than other commuter railroad in the country. Santoro emphasized NJ Transit’s need for more funding and an additional 305 new employees to help safely operate the railroad. In local sports news, the New York Knicks lost at home to the Utah Jazz last night by a score of 114 – 109. The Brooklyn Nets will go up against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday at 7:30 pm. And in the NHL, the Islanders face the Cancucks tonight at 7 pm. Tomorrow night, the Devils take on the Hurricanes and the Rangers take on Vancouver; both games are scheduled for 7 pm.
