The Spring Valley youth summer programs are in danger of being postponed or cancelled this year, due to a delay in paperwork. According to Mayor Demeza Delhomme, Youth Bureau Director Sonia Barton never filed the necessary paperwork and he stated that the village trustees didn’t approve a resolution for fees that was proposed at multiple meetings. According to the resolution the camp, normally held at the Luis Kurtz Center in Spring Valley, would cost $550 dollars for children from outside the village, $450 for the first child of residents, and $400 for a second. The resolution was defeated at a recent meeting with Delhomme and Trustee Anthony Leon voting yes. Trustee Vilair Fonvil abstained from voting and Trustees Emilia White and Asher Grossman were absent. Fonvil stated that he wanted to review costs with a program director, but was not given the time. Barton stated that she has run the five to six week program for fourteen years without facing major problems and this year the mayor told her that he would find someone else to do it. Barton stated that she met with Mayor Delhomme on May 14 and was suspended without pay, though she could not discuss details. According to Delhomme he will be meeting with state officials about getting the summer camp started in time and if it does not work out he will reach out to the Martin Luther King Center for space. Delhomme stated that the village may also contribute $20,000 to the center for their own summer.
