At a press conference held Monday state and county government officials met to discuss stricter safety rules for the U.S. Transportation Department when it comes to carrying crude oil. According to the Journal News at least fourteen trains carrying oil travel through Rockland County daily, and representatives including Congresswoman Nita Lowey, and Legislators Harriet Cornell and Alden Wolfe are all demanding that the changes be made to tank stability and travel routes taken by trains, especially through residential and environmentally- sensitive areas. The move was endorsed by New York Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Charles Schumer, and supported by many residents. Rockland County Sheriff Louis Falco stated that he has an upcoming meeting with CSX Railroads and his office will continue their recent efforts of checking speed restrictions.
