Rockland County Clerk Paul Piperato is facing a law suit for withholding pistol permit records from the public. According to Robert Freeman, the Executive Director of the state Committee on Open Government, Piperato ignored orders to release the records of names and addresses of permit holders in Rockland County in October 2013 and if seen in court he could be held personally responsible for monetary damages and fees. According to CynDee Royle, editor of the Journal News, when the news outlet reached out for records Piperato denied them twice. Royle stated that the law recently changed, requiring the Clerk’s office to redact any information approved to be kept private for some permit holders, though the remainder of the information is legally available to the public. According to Terry Grosselfinger, Rockland’s FOIL Appeals Officer, he ordered the release of information to the Journal News in May 2013, and he and new County Attorney Thomas Humbach would continue looking into the situation.
