Six months after a lawyer for the firm representing East Ramapo School District cursed and yelled at parents after a board meeting, the district is still using the Long Island based firm Minerva & D’Agostino. According to a bill report for the months of July to September the district was charged $73,900, even though officials stated after the incident on July 2 that they would find a new law firm to represent them. The attorney involved may or may not still work for Minerva & D’Agostino, though he was immediately taken off any East Ramapo cases. From July 23 to August 30 the district opened requests for proposals from other firms, to which four responded, but no hiring has happened. The firm is paid $250 an hour and $125 for travel, more than twice than the previous firm’s fees. County Executive Elect Ed Day recently wrote a letter to Education Commissioner John King, urging him to do whatever it takes to assist in finding a new firm and removing the current representation from their position. School Board President Yehuda Weissmandl stated that it is tough to find someone who is willing to do the job and is also qualified. For the end of the 2012-2013 school year the district was budgeted $660,000 though spending for legal fees is estimated to be 3 million.
