FBI Investigation Leads To Arrests In Yeshivas

An FBI raid on a Monsey yeshiva Wednesday night resulted in the arrest of the head rabbi and nine others who were under investigation throughout Monsey, New Jersey, and Brooklyn. Rabbi Martin Wolmark, Dean of Yeshiva Shaarei Torah of Monsey was arrested in connection to a kidnapping scheme, where gang members were hired to beat and torture Orthodox Jewish men with cattle prods, to get them to grant their wives religious divorces. According to the FBI, they placed an undercover agent, who posed as a woman looking to hire the rabbis and gang members who were responsible for about twenty kidnappings in the past few years. Among the accused was a prominent rabbi and Ultra- Orthodox divorce mediator from Brooklyn, Mendel Epstein, as well as an alleged Monsey resident, Ariel Potash. The FBI has yet to release the rest of the defendants’ names. All arrested were arraigned in Federal Court in Trenton, New Jersey Thursday, and are waiting for hearing dates, without bail.
